The inspection process for powderpost beetles begins with identifying the source(s) of the infestation. This is the most important step of the entire treatment plan. Without identifying the origin of the powederpost beetle infestation, the control strategy cannot move forward, and any treatment applied would be completely ineffective. Our entomologist looks for signs of infestation sources by examining hardwood surfaces for small, round exit holes, fine wood dust (frass), and evidence of hollowness or structural weakening. Special attention is given to unfinished or moisture-prone wood, such as flooring, beams, furniture, and stored lumber. Low-light, poorly ventilated areas like basements and attics are also carefully inspected for signs of active or historical beetle activity.
Powderpost Beetle Extermination
Once the source(s) of the powderpost beetles have been confirmed, our entomologist develops a targeted extermination strategy. The first step is to carefully remove any infested wooden items that can be taken out, using a controlled and isolated method to prevent stray beetles from spreading and causing further infestation.
If the affected wood cannot be removed, it is treated using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods. When appropriate, the wood’s moisture content is reduced and maintained below 13% to prevent reinfestation.

Powderpost Beetle Infestation in Lumber
In videos 1 and 2 several pieces of lumber are infested and destroyed by powderpost beetles. The circular exit holes are caused by these beetles as a part of their life cycle.
