Case Study: When Bed Bugs Came to Watch a Movie – Etobicoke Retirement Home
Bed bugs in retirement homes are a serious concern, not just for residents’ comfort but for their peace of mind. Recently, our team was called to an Etobicoke retirement home after a resident discovered what she thought was a bug on her bed. This case perfectly illustrates the difference between thorough, professional pest control and “spray-and-pray” approaches.
The Discovery
One evening, a resident enjoyed a movie in the retirement home’s on-site theatre. Later that night, she noticed a tiny insect on her bed. Using a flashlight, she examined it closely, took a photo, and sealed it in a container. The next morning, she reported the incident to management, even though she had no bites or other signs of infestation.
Management immediately contacted us to inspect her room.
Our Inspection Process
Our team of entomologists and licensed exterminators conducted a detailed inspection of the resident’s suite. We used a combination of advanced techniques to ensure no detail was overlooked:
- Visual Inspection: We examined every inch of the room for bed bugs, eggs, nymphs, exoskeletons, and fecal matter. We also coached the resident on identifying signs and preventing potential infestations.
- Forensic Detection: Using a blue-light torch with an orange filter, we looked for subtle evidence that might otherwise be missed.
- CO2 and Heat Traps: These simulate a human presence, drawing bed bugs out of hiding so even the most concealed insects can be detected.
Despite our exhaustive efforts, we found no evidence of bed bugs in her suite.
Finding the Source
We analyzed the insect the resident had captured and confirmed it was a baby bed bug, in its earliest stage. Knowing that bed bugs rarely appear spontaneously, we asked her about recent activities and locations she had visited. She mentioned the theatre on her floor.
We inspected the theatre thoroughly and discovered an infestation. This step was crucial.
Rather than stopping at her suite, we traced the problem to its origin, demonstrating the difference between genuine pest control and superficial treatments.
If we had not traced the problem back to its source (the theatre), it would have been extremely likely for the bed bug infestation to spread into other rooms and resident suites.
Treatment and Results
Once the source was identified, we implemented a full bed bug treatment for the theatre, using safe, effective, and scientifically guided methods.
Building management was impressed with our approach, and our work was even featured in their monthly bulletin.
Why Thorough Pest Control Matters
This short case highlights a very important message. That is the importance of integrity, diligence, and expertise in pest control. Unlike companies that only treat the first visible problem, we investigate, trace, and eliminate the source of infestations. Our approach prioritizes trust, honesty, and lasting results for Toronto and GTA properties, including retirement homes, condos, and residences throughout Etobicoke, North York, and Mississauga.
Our team could have easily dismissed the problem after noticing zero signs of infestation in our client’s suite. However, we did not and that is because our company is built on those values above and is made up of a team of experts. We knew bed bugs do not randomly appear. Bed bugs are hitchhikers, and finding the source from which they are developing and hitchhiking is the most important and crucial part of any pest control job.
