Case Study: Storage Bed Frame Infestation

25
Jan, 2026

This Toronto bed bug case study demonstrates how quickly bed bugs can move from one item to another and how easily an infestation can spread if it goes unnoticed.

Bed Bug Activity Originating at the Bed

A Toronto resident contacted Pest Solution Services after noticing bed bug activity around his bed. It was a typical call that our team receives every day. The signs were typical as well, including bites and visible bed bugs in the sleeping area. During the inspection, it became clear that the bed was the original source of the infestation.

However, the problem did not stop there.

Briefcase Placed Near the Bed Becomes Infested

The client had a habit of placing his briefcase directly against the side of the bed. Over time, bed bugs migrated from the bed frame and mattress into the briefcase.

Inside the briefcase and on the handle of the briefcase, bed bugs had begun laying eggs, turning it into a secondary harbourage. Items like briefcases are especially risky because they travel with people and often go unnoticed during inspections.

Here is a video showing the condition of the breifcase:

How Close Contact Allows Bed Bugs to Spread

Bed bugs do not jump or fly, but they move very efficiently through close contact. When personal items are placed against an infested bed, bed bugs can easily crawl into seams, pockets, and linings.

In this case, the client did not take the briefcase outside the home, which prevented the infestation from spreading further. If that briefcase had been brought to work, public transit, or another residence, the infestation could have spread across Toronto very quickly.

Treatment

Our entomologist developed a treatment plan using integrated pest management (IPM) guidelines.

The briefcase and the surrounding bedroom were treated thoroughly as part of a complete bed bug control plan. Our team used several techniques including, mechanical methods, and heat when applicable.

Early Detection Prevents City Wide Spread

This short case highlights an incredibly important idea, which is how easily bed bugs can spread beyond a single home. A single infested item can introduce bed bugs into offices, vehicles, condos, and public spaces (like the TTC).

Early inspection and treatment not only protect the home but also help prevent infestations from spreading throughout Toronto and the GTA.

As a community it is our job to protect our community, and that includes preventing infestations from spreading throughout through early detection.

If you suspect you may have bed bugs, do not wait for the infestation to spread. Call us and get professional advice and help.
