Case Study: How Traveling for Business Brought Bed Bugs Into a GTA Condo
Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers, and one of the most common ways they spread into homes is through luggage after travel. This case study highlights how a Toronto business traveler unknowingly introduced bed bugs into his condo, and how Pest Solution Services’ entomologist-led inspection and treatment solved the problem.
Bed Bugs Found on Luggage
A Toronto resident first called us after noticing suspicious insects crawling on his luggage. Concerned, he reached out to Pest Solution Services for help.
During the initial conversation, our entomologist asked him about the situation in detail. Such as, where he first noticed the insects, how often he travels, and where he usually keeps his luggage at home. The client explained that he frequently travels internationally for business and had just returned from a trip. Because his condo was quite small, he admitted that he had placed his suitcase directly on his bed to save space.
This detail immediately raised concern. Placing travel bags on a bed is one of the easiest ways for bed bugs to transfer from luggage into sleeping areas. What the client thought was just a minor issue with his suitcase had likely already spread into his bedroom. A major red flag that required urgent attention.
When our entomologist arrived for inspection he saw several bed bugs and bed bug eggs harboured on the suitcase. The following video shows a small excerpt of what our entomologist found:

Bed Bugs Spread to the Bed
Our entomologist’s suspisicons were also confirmed when he saw the bed. The luggage was still sitting on the bed, and closer inspection revealed that the bed bugs had migrated from the suitcase into the bed frame and mattress. What started as a small problem in the luggage had now become a much larger infestation inside the bedroom itself.
The client was shocked, he thought he had simply spotted a few bugs in his suitcase. In reality, his sleeping space was already compromised.
Treatment Plan: Science Always Wins
Our entomologist designed a custom treatment strategy to eliminate the infestation and prevent future outbreaks:
- Targeted treatment of the luggage, mattress, and surrounding furniture using IPM techniques and mechanical treatment methods.
- Detailed inspection and treatment of baseboards, electrical outlets, and flooring gaps, which are common hiding spots for traveling bed bugs.
- Installation of interceptor monitors under the bed legs to detect and track any surviving pests.
- Education and prevention tips, including proper luggage storage. We advised the client to never place travel bags on the bed and instead keep them isolated until they are sure that they brought no hitchhikers. It is also a good practice to clean your luggage after travelling.
Be Bed Bug Aware When Traveling
After the treatment and monitoring period, the infestation was completely resolved. No further bed bug activity was detected, and the client was able to enjoy his home without stress or bites.
This case highlights a critical lesson: bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. Luggage is one of the most common ways they spread into Toronto condos and apartments. By storing travel bags properly and seeking professional help at the first sign of trouble, residents can prevent small problems from becoming costly infestations.
