Common Ant Infestations
Carpenter Ants can pose a massive threat to wooden structures such as a wooden deck or shed. The night-time active ant can be identified by a homeowner: look for wooden dust/shavings, the entrance to the colonies nest will look like slots in wood with wooden particles/shavings at the entrance.
Little Black Ant:
These small ants are easily fed from un-clean kitchens. Their nests can be found inside the home in wooden furniture or walls. A homeowner may identify them as completely black in colour and foraging around the yard (where they can also be found) near the home or walking along the interior walls of the home.
The Pavement Ant nests in small openings of stone and pavement structures such as stone patios and walkways. They can also enter the home via cracks in the structure and nest in floors and insulation. Foraging in a long trail, workers look different (especially the head) from the Little Black Ant despite having the same colour.

This stage helps homeowners understand if they have an infestation, and what the next steps should be. Identifying (all or most of) the following: ant colony, nesting possibilites, property damage possibilites, house sanitation, and house perimeter condition is needed to draw an extermination plan. Homeowner experience with the pest (discovery, frequency, sighting locations) is also crucial.
Seeing ants in your home? Ask an entomologist anything!
Extermination scenarios include either a coupled treatment of both the house perimeter and house interior, or direct nest applications, or by-stander methods that can show effectiveness in days. Perimeter: may be necessary to unclutter the perimeter and cut back branches that are in contact with the house. Interior: correct use of pesticide and nest location if needed. By-Stander: method in which ants forage pesticide and colony diminishes.
Ant Control Services
If you have been noticing frequent ant intruders in your home, it is wise to educate yourself and understand ant control before taking further steps. Speak with an entomologist and have your questions answered.
Frequency and location of ant sightings may suggest the:
- size of the colony
- nest proximity
- food source
With this elementary information homeowners infer a possible infestation level and try to get rid of ants on their own. However, with a simple understanding, ignorance of many other variables, and ignorance of ant control methods, homeowners can easily be unsuccessful. Contact for Ant Control, or read service details.
